If the answer to both the above is “Yes”, then you need to seriously think about setting down roots in Portland.
The reason is that Portland is fast turning into an “onshoring” hub. That means that large companies in the US, instead of sending work overseas for processing (i.e., outsourcing) are now getting the work done in the country for more or less the same cost.
The software engineering costs in Portland are among the lowest in the US. Although they may not be the lowest, when “cost” is knowledgeably analyzed, Portland could well be the leader. That is because cost involves more than just an hourly rate. It includes other factors that have a bearing on an assignment, some of which are:
- Delays because of rework due to lack of understanding instructions
- Delays due to errors
- Delays due to holidays in other countries
- Possibility of overseas provider disappearing
Portland has none of the above shortcomings and is booming as an onshoring hub.
At the time of this writing, if you are a database developer, Portland is a career goldmine. Salaries are excellent for developers with more than two years of serious experience. Which is why I went there, landed a plum job and am now basking in the clean, quiet air of this amazing city. Let me leave you with a video on the subject and with an invitation to seriously look here if you need a career change.
